| This is Volvo's new platform |

A single basic engine that will fit all models. And a single platform that forms the basis for all cars. That is Volvo's new technology strategy is especially designed for a relatively small producer. Volvo Car Corporation believes in smaller engines and lighter cars. In addition, upgraded it to a future as independent, but relatively small manufacturers.
So one can interpret Monday's announcement that the company is investing
in the future on a direct basis engine with four cylinders, which can
be built both as gasoline and diesel as well. At the same time puts you
on the strategy to have different platforms for different sizes of cars.
Looking ahead, designed and built all the models from a single
platform. The first model to be introduced 2014th.
A car's platform
consists of the basic structure, which builds in stability, crash
safety, facilities for engine and other technologies. With it also
follows that a large proportion of the components are the same and that
all cars can be manufactured on a single line in the factory.
The advantages are many:
+ Shorter development time for each car model since the same technical basis, the suppliers and the development method used.
+ Lower development costs because there is no need to develop and make extensive tests of several foundations.
+
Fewer components to develop and test. An example of Volvo chief Stefan
Jacoby mentioned that the number of different fuel tanks will be reduced
from the current 50-60 to just three.
+ Lower purchasing costs
because at least 40 percent of the components are common to all models.
Volvo simply get bigger discount, the more components you are buying
from a supplier.
+ Chance to be in the forefront of development, not
least in relations with major suppliers of such safety systems and
electric drivetrains - again a result of that Volvo can order larger
series.
+ More flexible production when all the models can be built
on the same line. Then it is enough also to a car factory in China,
although it will manufacture all models. Furthermore, you can freely
distribute the cars between the two main European factories in Torslanda
and Ghent, Belgium.
But there are also disadvantages. A platform can
not be shrunk or stretched how much any time without having problems
with weight, space, rigidity and handling.
The designers must also
ensure that the components that customers come in contact with, such as
seats, instrument panel, gear shift, steering wheel and the like, really
differs between expensive and cheaper cars. During Monday's
presentation of the new strategy emphasized Stefan Jacoby several times
that Volvo is a luxury brand.
