How does it look like: the car that will be Volvo's cash cow over the next six or seven years. Volvo S60 is the company's sportiest car so far. And this fall is a less emphasized sports estate.
Appearance, handling, safety and new horsepower fueled engines to attract a younger group of fashion-conscious bilentusiaster to Volvo showrooms. See slideshow above.
Detailed 30 000 Asian customers will annually be seduced by the new car, and a similar number in Europe and the United States.
Estate car is however mainly a European business, although the least of
all resembles a donkey load. But outsides of Europe, used estate cars
mainly for freight.
The car's exterior has been created by Organ Sterner.
He points out the forward-leaning base form and the sweeping lines that hold together the car and give it a compact appearance.
Although it is slightly longer and wider than its predecessor, the new
S60 looks smaller, thanks in part to the tapered transitions from the
car's sides to the front and rear.
"Say hello"
Volvo's design director Peter Horbury emphasizes the car's Scandinavian
heritage in both appearance and function. He also thinks that the world
at large is starting to embrace the Scandinavian humanist values -
including countries like China and India.
Most seem happy Horbury be marked with the car's front end:
- It will come up and say hi, like a face. It is particularly important in China.
Bronze and gold back
Volvo has gradually changed as the language of the 1980s square boxes
for today's dynamic lines. But in color selection and interior design
is the 80's back.
Bronze and gold colors are back in vogue. Similarly brown leather and dark glossy wood on the center console.
Built in Torslanda plant
While the S60 is manufactured in Ghent, Belgium, together with the
XC60, V60 will be built in Torslanda plant. It opens up the possibility
to shift production between factories in line with demand.
As the first car may be S60 a security system to prevent drivers from
driving on the pedestrian. When a person crosses the car's path
dangerously close, warns the driver of a light and sound signals.
If collision threaten cross the car brakes automatically, the system
interact radar in the radiator grille with a camera behind the
windscreen.
Efficient but powerful engines
The car in the 60 series has the same technical platform as Volvo's
larger models. They also share components with other cars in the Ford
Group, including the new turbocharger and gasoline direct injection
from Ford as modified by Volvo.
These four-cylinder engines have performance six-cylinder, but use less
fuel. The effect varies from 150 horsepower (112 kW) for the smallest
engine to 240 horsepower (179 kW) for the sportiest two-liter engine.
Torque ranges from 240 to 320 Nm.
Saving gas at G
This year later, including diesel engine of 115 hp (86 kW) and torque
of 270 Nm. This should not take more than 4.3 liters per 100 km in
mixed driving.
The most popular engine in Europe learn enough to become Volvo's new
five-cylinder diesel with 2.0 liter engine capacity, which, although
torque of 400 Nm and an output of 160 horsepower (119 kW) should not
take more than 5.2 liters per 100 km.
