![]() Prototype ion engine developed by Paulo Lozano
Electric propulsion of miniature satellites of interest to U.S.A Air Force which failed to test a small Jon thruster.
Doctor Paulo Lozano of MIT, leads the research. He has found the ion sources are suitable in a mini thruster.
With the small electric motors make it possible even for mini-satellites
Cubes and change orbits, for example, so that they can be directed to
controlled re-entry into the atmosphere and which is destroyed rather
than become space debris in orbit.
The technique has other applications as Paulo Lozano. Fast ions can be used to etch semiconductor chips with line widths in the nanometer scale, or to produce micro-mechanics. The prototype of a mini thruster should be done according to Lozano about four or five months. Later this year, it might be possible to test the electric drive in a vehicle. |
