Billion cruisers could become scrap
Scrapped or salvaged - that is the question for Costa Concordia shipping.

Even before the inquiry on the Costa Concordia, the accident is complete, start discussions on the future. Should the capsized ship salvaged or scrapped?

There are two options for the boat accident Costa Concordia. Either it can be salvaged, repaired and returned to work, or it must be scrapped. The ship is worth 4 billion, but a salvage and renovation could cost as much as a billion.

The company has not made a decision.  The damage to the hull and machinery can be too large for a renovation to be profitable.

Three of the world's largest wreckers are on hand to demonstrate their interest: Dutch Smit International, Titan Salvage and Svitzer.

The most likely method is "parbuckling", dragging the ship on an even keel with raw power. The question is on the Costa Concordia is too large. MV Rockne which capsized in 2004 was salvaged by Smit with parbuckling. It was considered an extremely large boat for the method. But Rockne was 125 feet shorter and much lower than the Costa Concordia.

The contract to pump out the oil has already gone to Smit. The company has already garnered several cruise ships, including the 290-meter vessel Pride of America in the same class as the Costa Concordia, which, however, sank at the dock during construction.

Smit barjade also the sunken Russian submarine Kursk in part by using a proprietary cutting technology.
