Your own stem cells can serve as a building material to the body's own parts. At the Karolinska Hospital, two patients so far rescued at life with the new method.
A difficult cancer 36-year-old was rescued in June back to life with the
help of stem cells. The patient had advanced cancer of the trachea.
Since it was not possible to obtain a donor was created Paolo
Macchiarini and his American partners a new trachea of biocompatible
polymers and covered it with stem cells from the patient. Once in place
attracts stem cells to implant into the stem cells from other parts of
the body.
In the new environment they develop ditlockade stem cells into cells
that ensures that the larynx is working properly in relation to other
body parts. Since everything is biocompatible needed no medication to
prevent the body from rejecting the new limb.
The patient's tumor was life threatening, said Professor Paolo Macchiarini, who led the 12-hour operation.
Five months after the transplant patient is doing well and living a
normal life. His throat has virtually re-formed. The successful result
has patients all over the world to look at Karolinska.
Recently performed a second surgery in which an artificial trachea,
covered with stem cells, implanted. Then the researchers took nanofiber
from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to help to create the graft.
The result is a larynx that is even more similar to the larynx when born
with. According to Paolo Macchiarni examines the now on the new cell
therapy can be used to repair damage in the lungs, heart and esophagus.
