![]() Hakan Eriksson quit after nine years as R & D manager at Ericsson. Here he was, he is most proud of - and what he could have done better. And requirements list for the next R & D manager.
Hakan Eriksson will instead become Ericsson's country manager in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, the first of February.
My super summation of my time as CTO is to Ericsson fared well in comparison with its competitors. Just look at Nortel, Motorola, Alcatel, Lucent, Nokia and Siemens and we are technology leaders in comparison with the new (Huawei and ZTE, reds note.) We have taken market share in mobile systems in 2011, says Hakan Eriksson. Most proud he is that Ericsson won 4g-war between WiMax and LTE. We never gave ourselves into WiMAX-track, and then it was difficult for WiMAX to succeed.
Perhaps I got through even harder in terms of efficiency of R & D
activities. Cleaned out a number of variations and ensured that we were
faster on the market.
Hakan Eriksson admits that it was a bit thin for a while after the purchase of companies Marconi and Redback.
Then it would have probably needed more R & D money to reach out with new products to market faster.
The great challenge for Ericsson's next CTO will be to help the operators to charge for different types of data services.
The last decade has mostly been about bitrate. Now we need to be able
to differentiate the data streams in the network and ensure that
operators can take different pay for different bits of data, he says.
This requires tools, he says, who understand the data bits are, where
users are, what devices they use and what subscriptions they have. The
networks will also be able to tell users that now are the low load in
the networks, now you can run at full speed and at the same time
connect it with the payment system.
The solution according to Hakan Eriksson is new software to the company's relatively new smart service router.
It is not decided who will be Ericsson's next R & D manager. But
there are a number of skills and qualities that he or she should have,
according to Hakan Eriksson.
Technically competent, strategic orientation, ability to explain, a good
relationship-building with customers and competitors, understand how to
build joint industrial ventures.
