Facebook builds the largest data center of its kind in Europe - in the catalog.  It will consist of three server rooms on 28,000 square feet each. It's been a lot of hyschpysch, but on Thursday announced Facebook's investment in its first European data center in Lulea.  Three giant server rooms to be built with millions of dollars in aid from the government.

We have investigated options around Europe, and after an extensive process, we concluded that the catalog had the best overall solution, with a climate suitable for natural cooling, access to clean energy, good soil, well-educated workforce and a skillful and dedicated business environment; said Tom Furlong, head of start-ups at Facebook, said in a statement.

The data center will be the largest of its kind ever built in Europe.  It will consist of three server rooms on 28,000 square feet each.  Completed data center becomes ten times larger than it is today the largest in Sweden.

The building process begins immediately.  The first server, the hall will be in operation for one year and the entire plant is expected to be completed 2014th

The establishment is believed to involve about 300 man-years are created during the first three years.  Lulea Enterprise and Invest Sweden has worked hard to get Facebook's establishment to Lulea.

This is the largest single investment in the catalog since the steel mill was founded in the 1940th  This is the beginning of an entirely new industries for our entire region, says Karl Petersen (S), mayor of Lulea, in the press release.

The cold has been a key factor in Facebook's choice of venue for their server rooms.  The natural chill in the air helps to keep down the temperature in the halls.

One of the server halls to be built by NCC.  The construction will be implemented in a joint venture with two U.S. construction companies, DPR Construction and Fortis Construction.  The order is worth approximately SEK 800 million, of which NCC's share is approximately 400 million.

Data center must be certified as Gold level in the environmental classification system LEED.
ImageThe building will require a lot of energy so the customer has set high standards for environmental classification, where the Gold is the second highest in Leeds.  We will also make use of VDC, Virtual Design and Construction, or virtual building, throughout the project, says Mats Eklund, Head of the northern region of the NCC, in a statement.

The hall is scheduled for completion in December 2012 and construction is expected to employ approximately 300 people.  Much of the work consists of complex installation jobs.

But Facebook does not have to bear the full catalog focus on their own.  The government has granted regional investment aid of up to 103 million dollars.

In a press release, the Government states that it has determined that the establishment is of strategic importance and that it will market the region and Sweden for further investment.

The investment in a data center will bring to the resort of excellence in a future growth area and, not least because of the proximity of Lulea Technical University, creating opportunities for many companies and businesses to eventually emerge in the region, says Minister Annie Loof.

Invest in Sweden believe that there are good opportunities to attract more large data centers in Sweden.

We see a strong interest in Sweden by including Internet and web companies, companies that offer different types of cloud services, and companies based IT infrastructure to others, says Tomas Sokolnicki to Invest Sweden, in a statement.

According to Lulea Business will in future be marketed as The Node Pole when more players in the computer industry to be processed.  The name should reflect the region's northern location and the fact that the place now becomes a hub for data traffic across Europe. We want to be a benchmark, a pole, for high-tech and energy-consuming activity, says Karl Petersen.
