Ericsson will supply an M2M solution to 400 vessels of Maersk, the world's largest shipping company. The shipping company expects to streamline and keep track of the operation.

Ericsson will equip 400 of 500 Maersk container ship with antennas and base stations using the GSM standard, the next two years.

Thereafter, the rest of the ships have the same solution.  The parties have also signed a seven-year managed services agreement. This means that Ericsson has total responsibility for that communication works, and is responsible for contact with the satellite operators and contractors.

Ericsson has developed the solution with Maersk. The development has taken place in Denmark and in satellite experts in the United States.

We have searched a number of patents. This is not a simple solution, but a breakthrough, assures Lars Toft, Ericsson Denmark Head.

According to Mike White, CEO of Maersk Line in the U.S., is the ability to access real time information about the boats and fuel consumption, which justified the investment.

Previously announced the Company and the vessels by connecting calls via satellite. With the new solution, they can remain in constant contact with each other, and the shipping company has thus full control over where vessels are operating, fuel consumption and other factors that affect efficiency. Thus expects Maersk to be able to lower operating costs.

With the new system will enable us to measure and detect potential system failures before they happen, says Mike White, in a video interview online.

According to Ericsson, Lars Toft is the value of Maerskkontraktet "significant". He would not quantify, but says that it is "more than ten million."

This is our largest M2M contracts in the transport industry. We have a M2M agreement with Schenker, but there were only a delleverantor, he says.

This contract shows that we can deliver this type of system to new sectors and on a large scale. The market potential is large.
