![]() 30 sunscreens have been removed from the Swedish market since last year. Companies can not prove that sunscreens have the promised protection.
Sun protection factor has not been checked. Water resistance has not been tested properly. There are a few of the unexpected behavior of the MPA discovered when they controlled 53 sun protection products in 2009 and fall 2008 were in the Swedish market.
These products are subject to cosmetics legislation and must provide the
protective effect promised, says Monica Tammela director of cosmetics
and hygiene products at the MPA.
The outcome of the review is that 29 sunscreen products voluntarily
withdrawn from the market. A product, Barrie Bassi My Child from
Stockholm but bans sale,
It feels good that it will be the result of our work. It is important
for consumers to have confidence in sunscreen products. For us, the
issue also from a public health priority, "said Lena Nohrstedt of the
MPA, which is one of those who carried out inspections of businesses.
Total MPA has visited 33 companies in 53 different sunscreen products.
The report of the work now published show that the 19 products had been
tested for protection against the so-called UVA radiation. It penetrates
deeper into the skin than UVB, which is the second type of radiation
from the sun. 13 products had not been tested against UVB radiation. Yet
there were protective factors indicated on the bottle or tube. In other
cases, tests were conducted with too few volunteers.
In the case of water-resistant sunscreen ability found MPA to just over
half of the 23 who were alleged to be water resistant had enough
evidence to prove it.
