Next Friday, the 35 meter long and 15 meters wide, solar-powered catamaran Turanor Planet Solar back to Monaco after a round the world which started in autumn 2010.
Initiative came from the Swiss Raphael Domjan, which ended up with the
Swiss watch manufacturer Dandino and the German energy consulting
Immosolar as main sponsors.
They hired the world-renowned ship designer Craig Loomes of New Zealand and hired yacht shipyard Knierim Yachtbau in Kiel. Turanor Planet Solar was launched in May 2010 after more than a year at the shipyard. Then it was transported down to Monaco to start his round the world along the equator on September 27, blessed by Prince Albert, who become a sponsor. Once out of the Mediterranean was on course to Miami, further towards Cancun, Mexico, across to Cartagena in Colombia and then into the Panama Canal and out into the Pacific. Next stop was French Polynesia, then Noumea and then Brisbane on Australia's east coast. Then they traveled north of Australia, Papua New Guines passed over the Indian Ocean into the Red Sea through the Suez Canal. And now it's only a week left. On May 4 is Prince Albert of Monaco Yacht Club's pier and receiving world-travelers, and get an extra star in Monaco's environmental protocol for its investment in new green technologies. Planet Solar is the largest and the world's first of its kind. It is 35 meters long, 23 meters wide, 6.1 meters high and weighs 95 tons. It is powered by a 120 kW electric motor that gets its power from the 38 000 solar cells, assembled into a 357 square foot solar panel. The solar panel has an installed power of 93.5 kW loading six large blocks lithium-ion batteries. |
