Vattenfall has gone into a hybrid power plant in Prenzlau in Germany, where wind energy is converted into hydrogen and thus able to store energy from wind turbines.
Prenzlauprojektet is a unique project in which several European energy
companies and research institutes are involved, not just the Waterfall.
It consists of a biogas unit, three wind turbines of 2 MW each, two combined heat and power stations and a elektrolysenhet producing hydrogen with electricity from wind turbines.
We combine here the production of renewable electricity, heat and
hydrogen, says Oliver Weinmann, head of Vattenfall Innovation in
Germany, in a statement.
Hydrogen can be used in the power plant to produce electricity and heat
or for use as fuel for cars - either directly by hydrogen in a
conventional engine or via fuel cells in an electric car.
In Germany, interest in hydrogen as a fuel for cars wide.
Prenzlau, which is ten mil north of Berlin, is a pioneer in Europe with this type of hybrid plants.
We will do this in more places - to produce hydrogen from wind energy,
says Vattenfall's press officer in Sweden, Boo Ehlin, to new
technologies.
Vattenfall will do it with their Prenzlaupartners Overall, Siemens, Enertrag and the various forskningsinstiuten.
The next, a hybrid power plant in the German state of Brandenburg.
