-In order to stem cells to become clinical therapies must have many cells. The problem we have solved now, "says Johan Hyllner, research manager at Cell Artis.

Bot for broken hearts, diabetes and testing of medicines. The use of all old-fashioned cells, stem cells are many. But to produce them so far has been a craft.

The goal of Cell Artis has since its inception in 2001 been to produce viable so-called embryonic stem cells and to industrialise the process. At the beginning of 2007 expanded to Scotland, where they were recruited by ITI, the Scottish equivalent of Vinnova.

This is where the industrial process was developed.

- We have gradually scale up production. Now we can produce billions of stem cells per day, "says Johan Hyllner.

It sounds like a bulky product, but is about one square meter surface of cells.

According to Johan Hyllner production now meets all requirements for an industrial process.

Mass-production is a prerequisite for developing future therapies with stem cells. These include the ability to cure diabetes, "says Johan Hyllner.

In October, the company concluded a potential one billion contract with the Scandinavian pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. The aim is to develop methods to mass-produce insulin-producing beta cells.

The first application of the industrial process, however, cardiac muscle cells that have already sold as a product.

-We are beginning to have advanced and unique products, and that is where we tried, "says Johan Hyllner.
