More than one billion crowns for seven years to do the engineering of stem cell research, new therapies for heart, lung and blood diseases are on the agenda. Behind the initiative is the American health authority NIH.
The world's largest public research sponsor, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announces now a major focus on stem cells. 18 teams may be over seven years, sharing the 1.2 billion Swedish kronor. The amount paid for the portion of the NIH that focuses on finding a cure for lung, heart and blood diseases.
The money is needed to stimulate research that may lead to new treatments for heart, lung and blood diseases, "says Elizabeth Nabel, at the NIH.
The money will, among other things, to go to a consortium that focuses on stem cells that had time to specialize so much that it is called multi-potent, or 'progenitor cells'. These include blood cells, which can only develop into the cells in your blood.
The consortium, called the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute of progenitor cell biology consortium, will be presented in more detail on Thursday of next week.
