![]() The new DNA reader from Ion Torrent (right) can be read by a human DNA in a day. he genetic letters are read by means of semiconductor technology (image left).
It is now ten years since the human genome was read for the first time. Since then, the cost of reading the DNA steadily fallen, from the millions at prices that make the technology is approaching a breakthrough in health care.
A dream frontier for the industry has long been one thousand dollars to read the DNA of a human being.
At gadget show CES in Las Vegas showed American Ion Torrent up a new DNA-readers to be able to cope with the task in one day. The company has developed a new technique for the genetic letters A, T, C and G. Instead of that in today's DNA readers use lasers, cameras and microscopes to decipher the genetic code are taking Ion Torrent by semiconductor technology. Sequencing The machine contains a chip that reads the genetic code. Ion Torrent, owned by biotech company Life Technologies, released their first DNA readers last year. The new machine includes an improved chip that makes reading faster and cheaper. But Ion Torrent is not alone in the market. Industry-leading Illumina, also based in the U.S., went in last week with the firm will be capable of reading of a human genome in one day at a price below $ 1000. |
