Nude Scanners are widely path into the EU but at Swedish airports the delay, state Transportation Board. At the same time the CAA later this year will make new attempts to scan at Landvetter.

Several European governments pledged to increase air safety by placing the body scanners at major airports. The question whether the equipment will be installed throughout the EU is red hot and being discussed in Brussels.

Scanners must have a high image resolution in order to reveal hidden objects on the body. But at the same time shows the prostheses, body piercing needles and colostomy bags.

How revealing images varies with the technique used:
Passive cameras produce a colored, but clear the body silhouette.
Camera active radar and lagdosrantgen depict on naked bodies to the smallest detail. At the same time filter technologies.

Metal arches are replaced
According to Eva Axne, head of security at Transport Board, has been "currently" no plans to introduce scanners in Sweden.

But she traces, however, that on a broad front will replace the existing metal structures of security checks in the future. This requires that the EU approves the equipment throughout the EU and the European Commission to establish the technical baseline. A new test with one of the foremost of today's scanner technology may this year be held at Landvetter in Gothenburg.

Already in 2005, revealed New Technology to Landvetter Airport as the first in Sweden was about to test the cameras naked. But the technology was early.

Not until 2008, the CAA safety at Landvetter a test, without passengers participated. Head of security at Landvetter, Dan Larsson, however, considered that the technology was not yet mature enough.

He, however, maintained contact with the camera manufacturer, the British company Thruvision. The company now has a finished product called the T8000, based on passive millimetervagsteknik. According to the manufacturer discovered the weapons, explosives, liquids, ceramics, gels and drugs under clothing.

- We believe that this technology has advantages over others, because it does not emit any electromagnetic waves, but acts as an infrared camera that reads the temperature differences. But we are we waiting for more information from the manufacturer before we decided to try, "says Dan Larsson.

No universal method
Nude Scanners may miss explosives. They are no universal method that can detect all kinds of terrorist threats. It says Anders Lennerman, Civil Aviation Administration security chief at the airport.

- But they are better than metal frames to detect hidden objects, "he says.

The Swedish explosives expert Henric Ostmark working on FOI, Defense Research, estimates that nude scanners as the control method must be supplemented with bomb detectors. It exists today, for example at the airport.

- Scanners can identify objects but must be complemented with other technical equipment which can smell and feel of explosive particles, known as sniffers, to increase the chances of detecting explosives, "he says.

According Henric Ostmark is the way terrorists can use to "fool" scanners so that explosives glued to the skin is not visible. But the approach is like he does not go into.
