Shorter sick leave, better mobility and less pain. To get a dish instead of a prosthetic arthrodesis is often better for the patient. That the according to new research from Linkoping University.

Eight out of ten people in the western world suffer at some time in their lives from severe back pain. The reason is often that the covers of the cushioning discs between our vertebrae crack and then makes it a lot worse. Phenomenon knows as disk degeneration and may begin as early as their 20s.
To date, arthrodesis has been the most common treatment. It can be about to change since Svante Berg, orthopedic surgeon at Stockholm Spine Center, for several years followed the two patient groups, each with 76 patients who were operated with the different methods. The next week he will defend his dissertation on his findings at Linkoping University.

The as-received disk prosthesis began working an average of two months earlier than those stiff surgeries, "says Svante Berg. In addition, hospital costs them less.

He also notes that twice as many of those who received the back object become completely free from pain, compared with those stiff surgeries.

Disk prosthesis is constructed as a sand-witch. The outer parts are manufactured in a chromium-cobalt-alloy, high strength and low friction. Between the elements is a disc of polyethylene, which is a common material in orthopedic context. The outer part is in contact with the vertebrae. To enable them to grow securely, the surface covered with small balls of titanium.

-At the operation, we will remove the failed disk and replace it with the prosthesis, "says Svante Berg.

Every year 3,000 people stiff surgery in Sweden. One of the most common causes is painful age changes in the disks, which despite the name can affect both young and old.
