Two years after they were presented for the first time, Siemens has now sold its first three wind turbines without gearboxes.
The company also announced to start a factory for the rotor blades in Canada.
The premiere at the market for direct-drive wind turbines is not
unexpected in the U.S. a market that Siemens earlier said it would
invest heavily in. There are three turbines of 3 MW each to be delivered to Crossroads wind farm in Oklahoma. They are part of a larger order, which includes 95 pieces of traditional 2.3-MW turbines are included. Siemens' new wind turbine is driven directly, ie no gearbox, and contains half as many parts as previously turbine models. According to the company lowers the cost of maintenance and makes plants more profitable. - Our new SWT-3.0-101 produces 25 percent more energy than our 2.3-MW turbine, but with a lower weight and only half of the parts, "says Henry Stiesdal, development manager for Siemens Wind Power, said in a statement. While Siemens sells its first direct-drive wind Turbine Company says that it plans to build a plant for manufacturing of rotor blades in Canada. The initiative is partly a result of a framework agreement on new, large shipments of turbines for the country. According to a press release from Siemens, the company has reached agreement with Samsung C & T to supply a total of 600 MW of wind power for several different projects in Canada. Its two years ago, Siemens Wind Power showed up the first prototypes of its new direct-drive wind turbines, writes the Danish newspaper engineer. Then they had a power of 3.6 MW and the generators were of the traditional type, with permanent magnet, low-speed synchronous generator. In December 2009 the company launched a new design - this time with a power of 3 MW of new efficient design of the generator, where the stator remains stationary while the rotor rotates around it. The turbine provides a slimmer and more compact design. With a length of 6.8 meters and a diameter of only 4.2 meters nacelle can thus be transported by normal vehicles. - Engine House at SWT-3.0-101 weighs only 73 tons, which is less than our normal 2.3-megawatt wind farm on, "says Henry Stiesdal. - Despite the compact design, we managed to get more space for our service, just because we have radically reduced the number of parts. |
